Rare 1998 Panoz AIV Roadster Showcases Lightweight American V8 Performance

The 1998 Panoz AIV Roadster remains one of the most unconventional American performance cars of the late 1990s, blending lightweight engineering with Ford V8 power in a package inspired by classic minimalist sports cars. Developed by low-volume automaker Panoz Auto Development, the roadster delivered supercar-level acceleration during its era while maintaining a distinctly analog driving experience.

Produced from 1996 through 2000, the Panoz AIV Roadster was designed around the philosophy of reducing weight rather than simply increasing horsepower. The model’s name stood for “Aluminum Intensive Vehicle,” a reflection of its construction approach. Approximately 70 percent of the vehicle by weight consisted of aluminum, including its chassis, body, and engine components.

At the heart of the car sat a 4.6-liter DOHC 32-valve V8 sourced directly from the Ford Mustang SVT Cobra. The naturally aspirated engine produced 305 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, paired with a Borg-Warner T45 five-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. While those numbers matched the Mustang Cobra of the same period, the significantly lighter Panoz transformed the drivetrain into something far more aggressive.

Weighing only 2,570 pounds, the AIV Roadster was capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.3 seconds, dramatically quicker than the heavier Mustang donor car. The lightweight structure, combined with independent front and rear suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, made the Panoz one of the quickest American production cars around road courses during its time.

The car’s engineering also reflected the unique advantages of a small-volume manufacturer. Panoz utilized an advanced extruded aluminum spaceframe chassis with a central backbone structure designed to provide rigidity, corrosion resistance, and low weight. Building each example required extensive hand labor, with production estimated at roughly 350 hours per vehicle.

Only 176 production examples were built, along with six earlier prototypes, making the AIV Roadster one of the rarer American sports cars of its era. The company’s close ties to motorsport further shaped the car’s development. Panoz’s parent organization was heavily involved in racing operations and ownership of major racing entities and circuits, including the American Le Mans Series, IMSA, Road Atlanta, Sebring International Raceway, and Mosport International Raceway.

Despite Panoz no longer operating today, many AIV Roadsters remain on the road thanks to their corrosion-resistant aluminum construction and the durability of the Ford-sourced drivetrain. Owners also benefit from relatively accessible replacement parts because many major mechanical components were sourced directly from larger manufacturers.

One featured 1998 example highlights the model’s unique styling and craftsmanship. Finished in black over a tan leather interior, the roadster features cycle-style front fenders, a clamshell hood, chrome trim, wind wings, and a lightweight aluminum chassis. The interior includes drilled aluminum pedals, a flat-bottom Nardi steering wheel, billet aluminum trim, air conditioning, and a centrally mounted instrument cluster.

The car rides on 18-inch Kosei-Roush alloy wheels with adjustable coilover suspension and power-assisted disc brakes at all four corners. Showing 42,000 miles, the example remains equipped with its original SVT-derived V8 and manual transmission, continuing to represent an era when lightweight construction and raw mechanical engagement defined American performance engineering.
