Virtual Ford Mustang GTD-K Blends Shelby GT500 Heritage With Modern GTD Performance Styling

As Ford’s seventh-generation S650 Mustang gains momentum in the marketplace, digital creators are increasingly turning their attention toward the high-performance halo models that have helped reignite interest in the iconic pony car. One unofficial concept now attracting attention is the Ford Mustang GTD-K, a virtual restomod project created by automotive artist Khyzyl Saleem, known online as “the_kyza.”

The design study reimagines a 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 through the lens of the modern Mustang GTD, blending vintage styling with aggressive contemporary race-inspired elements. The result is a heavily modified fastback that channels the appearance and attitude of Ford’s latest track-focused performance flagship.

The timing of the project coincides with a strong rebound for the Mustang brand. After struggling early in 2025 as the electric Ford Mustang Mach-E outsold the traditional sports car, the S650 Mustang regained traction later in the year and carried that momentum into the following sales period. Ford reported more than 14,000 Mustang sales during the first quarter, representing a significant increase over the same period the previous year. The momentum continued in April, when sales climbed again as the Mustang maintained its position as America’s best-selling sports car.

Performance headlines have also helped fuel renewed enthusiasm surrounding the nameplate. The Mustang GTD recently reclaimed attention at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife after delivering an impressive lap time despite competing against significantly more powerful rivals. The achievement reinforced the GTD’s reputation as a precision-focused performance machine capable of maximizing handling, aerodynamics and power delivery rather than relying strictly on horsepower figures.

That aggressive engineering philosophy is reflected throughout the GTD-K virtual build. Saleem’s rendering adopts the widebody stance and aerodynamic enhancements associated with the modern GTD while retaining the unmistakable silhouette of the 1967 Shelby GT500. The car features a dramatically lowered suspension setup, widened fenders and race-inspired bodywork that gives the classic fastback a modern motorsports appearance.

The digital concept is finished in Wimbledon White with contrasting black accents that emphasize the aggressive body lines. Completing the look are HRE Wheels P301 aftermarket wheels, adding a contemporary touch to the retro-inspired design.

While purely a virtual creation, the GTD-K imagines what could happen if classic Shelby styling were paired with the mechanical spirit of the Mustang GTD. The concept hints at the possibility of incorporating Ford’s supercharged 5.2-liter Predator V8 engine and other high-performance GTD-inspired hardware into a vintage Mustang platform.

As the Mustang continues its modern resurgence, projects like the GTD-K demonstrate how the iconic nameplate continues to inspire creativity among designers, enthusiasts and performance fans alike.
