The 1999 Shelby Series 1 remains one of the most unusual and exclusive vehicles ever associated with Carroll Shelby’s name, and a remarkably preserved example is once again drawing attention to the limited-production American sports car. With only 249 units produced, the Series 1 represented Shelby’s attempt to create a fully original performance car rather than a modified version of an existing production vehicle.
Finished in silver with a black and gray interior, this particular example has traveled just 2,435 actual miles since new. The low mileage and largely original condition help distinguish the roadster as one of the better-preserved examples of a car that occupies a unique place in Shelby automotive history.

Introduced during the late 1990s, the Shelby Series 1 combined lightweight construction, rear-wheel-drive performance, and a naturally aspirated V8 engine in a package designed to reflect Carroll Shelby’s long-standing philosophy of blending power with agile handling. Unlike earlier Shelby-branded vehicles that were heavily based on Ford production models, the Series 1 was developed as a purpose-built sports car carrying its own identity.
At the heart of the car is a 4.0-liter Aurora V8 engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission mounted at the rear for improved weight distribution. The drivetrain configuration was engineered to enhance balance and handling characteristics while still delivering the strong acceleration expected from a Shelby performance vehicle. Electronic fuel injection and four-wheel power disc brakes further modernized the package for the era.
The exterior design remains distinct from many sports cars of its time, with flowing body lines, a low-slung stance, and open-top roadster proportions emphasizing its performance intentions. Riding on factory-style suspension and 18-inch two-piece wheels, the car maintains the aggressive yet refined appearance that helped separate it from more traditional American muscle cars.
Inside, the cabin blends driver-focused simplicity with upscale features. Leather seats, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, and a tilt steering wheel provide a combination of comfort and convenience, while the preserved dashboard and gauges reflect the car’s careful ownership history. Additional features include air conditioning, heat, defrost, an AM/FM radio, cassette player, and CD player.

The Shelby Series 1 arrived during a transitional period in American performance car development, as manufacturers increasingly incorporated modern electronics and refinement into sports cars while still attempting to preserve analog driving engagement. The Series 1 stood apart by offering a more exclusive, hand-built alternative with direct ties to Carroll Shelby himself.
Despite its rarity and historical significance, the Series 1 never reached large production numbers. Manufacturing challenges and changing market conditions limited the project’s scale, ultimately making surviving examples considerably rarer than many contemporary sports cars from the same era.

Today, the model has become a sought-after collector vehicle among Shelby enthusiasts and sports car collectors looking for something outside the mainstream. The combination of limited production, low mileage, original condition, and Shelby heritage continues to strengthen the Series 1’s reputation as one of the more distinctive American performance cars of the late 20th century.
