Collectors who follow the earliest air-cooled cars may recognize the appeal of that opening 356 – Motorious recently covered a numbers-matching 1955 Porsche 356 "Pre-A" Speedster that crossed the block at Gooding & Christie's, a reminder of how sought-after these pre-A cars remain.

The 911 R was Porsche's love letter to purists. He kept the car for nearly forty years, and in that time it became a familiar and respected fixture within the international 300SL community, eventually taking on his nickname as its own.

After passing through a handful of subsequent caretakers, the Roadster underwent a comprehensive restoration at the hands of Coachwerks in Victoria, British Columbia, a shop with a strong reputation for its work on historic European automobiles. The result is a car finished in a handsome Anthracite Grey Metallic over a natural leather interior, a combination that suits the 300SL's elegant lines while staying true to its original character.

Mechanically, this 300SL carries all the hallmarks that made the model a technical marvel in its day. Chrysler built only 666 Hemi 'Cudas for the 1970 model year, and just 284 of those left the factory with the A833 four-speed manual, pistol-grip shifter, and Dana 60 rear axle that this Rally Red example wears. That combination of the 426ci Hemi and a stick shift is the single most sought-after recipe in the E-body lineup, which is why even a well-worn or modified example still draws a crowd of bidders.

This particular car isn't a numbers-matching survivor, though. Its listing describes a non-original 426-based Hemi V8 that was bored and stroked to roughly 472ci by Larry Shepard of Hemis Only, backed by an explosion-proof bellhousing, Hooker headers, and a Strange Engineering driveshaft feeding a Super Track Pak axle geared at 4.10:1. The car also wears a Shaker-style hood, Rallye instrument cluster, a six-way driver's seat, and power brakes, and the seller says it was recently refinished in its original color with a freshly rebuilt engine and transmission. More recently, in 2024, the car benefited from roughly $75,000 in service work performed by Robert Webster of RW Fabrications. The 300 SL's road-going Gullwing coupe was directly derived from the tube-framed sports racer that won the 1952 Carrera Panamericana and the 24 Hours of Le Mans that same year. The standout of the trio is a Duesenberg that spent the war buried beneath a pile of hay, a low-tech hiding method that turned out to be remarkably effective. It's the kind of survival story that reads like fiction: a luxury American classic, built for wealthy owners in peacetime, reduced to a shape under farm feed so it could outlast an army. The car made it through the war intact and eventually found its way to the Gilmore's collection, where it now anchors the exhibit's account of preservation under pressure.

Located in Northridge, California, the buggy carries a clean California title, which should make registration straightforward for the next owner. The Manx name traces back to Bruce Meyers, a boatbuilder who applied fiberglass hull-molding tricks to a shortened Volkswagen Beetle floorpan in the early 1960s.
