Ultra-Rare 1970 Plymouth Sport Fury 6-BBL Resurfaces After Four Decades in Storage

A rare 1970 Plymouth Sport Fury GT that spent more than four decades stored in a barn has been brought back to life in time for the 2025 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals. The discovery was made earlier this year by Tom Hergert of Rocket Restorations, who learned of the car when the original owner’s son began searching for information on the long-parked C-body. His search led him to a video of another Fury GT, sparking a connection that ultimately brought the car to Hergert’s shop.

The Sport Fury had been parked in 1981 and left untouched since then, still carrying its original 440-cubic-inch Six-Barrel V8. Plans for the car focused on preservation rather than a full restoration, honoring the family’s desire to keep the vehicle as authentic as possible. Six months after arriving at the shop, the big Plymouth is now running and capable of moving under its own power, though not yet fully road-ready.

Its condition when pulled from hiding reflected decades of neglect, with heavy dust, interior damage from rodents and an engine that appeared unlikely to fire again. The revival has transformed it into a presentable survivor, with a clean interior and a rebuilt V8 that retains its original triple-carburetor setup. That detail alone places the car among the rarest versions of the Sport Fury GT.

While the Fury lineup was produced in large numbers for 1970, the GT variant was limited to 666 units, most equipped with a single four-barrel carburetor. Six-Barrel cars were exceedingly scarce, with estimates ranging from 61 to 69 produced and only 11 known to exist today. Of those, just four are believed to still have their factory engines.
