The British automaker has broadened its lineup in recent years with new vehicle types and powertrain choices, but the Emira remains the company’s most traditional model. With two doors, a mid-mounted internal combustion engine and a focus on lightness, the Emira continues to represent the core formula that helped define Lotus for generations.
The new 420 Sport builds on that identity with added performance and available weight-saving equipment. It is powered by an AMG-sourced 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 414 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. The model’s name refers to its 420 PS output.
Those figures give the 420 Sport a modest but meaningful increase over the standard Emira, adding 14 horsepower and 14 pound-feet of torque. Lotus says the added output helps the coupe accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 186 mph.
Buyers looking for the sharpest version of the car can add the Lightweight Handling package, which removes more than 55 pounds from the vehicle’s curb weight. The package also brings aerodynamic changes designed to make the car more stable at speed, including a revised front splitter, altered vents and intakes, longer side sills, a lip spoiler and a louvred lift gate.
Lotus says the aerodynamic updates generate the same amount of downforce as the weight removed by the package, giving the 420 Sport a more focused balance between reduced mass and improved grip.
The latest Emira also introduces a feature inspired by one of Lotus’ best-known earlier models. For the first time on the Emira, buyers can choose a removable tinted glass roof panel, a detail that recalls the Esprit.
Orders for the Emira 420 Sport are open through Lotus dealers. Deliveries are expected to begin in August, and the model is planned for the U.S. market with a starting price of $122,900.
