Air-cooled 911s are getting harder to find in this kind of shape, and Broad Arrow Auctions is bringing a particularly appealing one to its Global Icons: Zoute Online sale. Lot 120 is a black-on-black 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, a matching-numbers 993 that comes with a six-speed manual, a long paper trail, and a pre-sale estimate of €130,000 to €160,000. Bidding closes on Wednesday, October 14.

The Last Air-Cooled 911s, Dressed Like a Turbo

The 993 generation closed out the air-cooled era, and the Carrera 4S is one of the most distinctive ways to enjoy it. Porsche built it on the Turbo's wide-body shell and gave it the Turbo-look wheels, along with the Turbo's brakes and suspension. What it skipped were the turbochargers and the big whale-tail spoiler, so the car has the stance without the shouting.

Behind the rear axle sits the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six, making 285 horsepower. It is paired with a six-speed manual and all-wheel drive, a combination that makes the car as usable on a wet Tuesday as it is on a favorite back road. Broad Arrow notes that this one retains its original matching-numbers engine.

A Well-Documented Life

This 4S was delivered new on April 22, 1998, through Porsche's Tourist Delivery program in Stuttgart. It was specified with comfort in mind, including optional front and rear leather seats, electrically adjustable front Comfort seats and air conditioning. It is a right-hand-drive car, likely intended for South Africa, but it ended up in Great Britain instead and was registered there in January 1999.

Early servicing was handled by Porsche specialists in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the odometer read 40,250 miles by 2003. The current owner, the car's third in Britain, bought it in 2006 from independent specialist Number 5 Garage and has kept it in London for two decades since. In that time it has been maintained by Porsche specialists, with invoices and correspondence on file back to 1999 and a clear HPI check.

The work list is a strong one. Charles Ivey carried out significant mechanical work in 2013, including attention to the engine and running gear. In 2014, Langley Autocraft performed substantial cosmetic work, including a bare-metal repaint. During that visit, a 996 gearknob and steering wheel were fitted, the latter for extra legroom, along with Xenon headlights. The most recent service was at Number 5 Garage in 2025, at 71,221 miles, and the car shows fewer than 71,500 miles today.

Why It Deserves Attention

Plenty of collectors chase the rarest 993 variants, but there is a lot to like about a car that is meant to be driven. The Carrera 4S pairs the last naturally aspirated, air-cooled flat-six with the Turbo's presence, in a well-kept example that has clearly been used and cared for rather than hidden away. Broad Arrow's description calls it a sports car suited to daily use, and the history file backs that up.

The sale is part of a busy Zoute week for Broad Arrow. If you are following along, we have also covered the 1974 Mercedes-Benz O 317 Porsche Renntransporter tribute, the time-capsule McLaren P1 and the Kimera EVO37 heading to the same event.
