Ultra-Rare BMW L7 V12 Appears for Sale in U.S., Reviving a Little-Known E38 Flagship

Some luxury cars fade quietly from public memory not because they lacked importance, but because they were built for an audience so small that few ever encountered them. The BMW L7 is one of those vehicles. Based on the E38-generation 7 Series, the L7 represented BMW’s most ambitious attempt at full chauffeur-driven luxury in the late 1990s. Now, one of the rarest examples of that effort has resurfaced in the United States through a current Bring a Trailer listing.

Produced between 1997 and 2001, the BMW L7 was an extended-wheelbase limousine developed for markets where rear-seat luxury mattered more than driving dynamics. Its wheelbase stretches 250 millimeters, or roughly 10 inches, longer than the already-lengthened 7 Series iL. Under the hood sits BMW’s 5.4-liter M73 V12 engine, rated at approximately 326 horsepower and 361 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. While capable by the standards of its era, outright performance was secondary to comfort and exclusivity.

Inside, the L7 distinguished itself with features unavailable on other BMW models at the time. Button-tufted leather seating, a privacy partition, and period-specific executive technology such as a fax machine placed it closer to a rolling office than a conventional luxury sedan. These cars were sold primarily in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, making U.S.-market examples exceptionally uncommon.

Historically, the L7 also holds significance within BMW’s internal structure. It was among the earliest projects undertaken by BMW Individual, marking one of the first times the program applied its bespoke philosophy to a flagship sedan. Total global production reached just 899 units, underscoring how specialized the model truly was.

The example currently offered in the U.S. was imported from Canada in 2024 and shows approximately 57,000 miles. It is finished in Nachtblau Metallic over Champagne leather and wears 20-inch ALPINA wheels along with an ALPINA front lip. Recent mechanical attention includes work to the brakes, brake lines, and control arms, and the self-leveling suspension remains operational. The sale also includes extensive dealer literature and an owner’s manual.

Rear-seat amenities remain a central attraction, with features such as a refrigerator, VHS player, footrest, sun blinds, and double-pane glass contributing to the limousine experience. With bidding active and limited availability worldwide, this L7 highlights both the rarity and enduring appeal of BMW’s most ambitious E38-era offering.
