1962 Pontiac Catalina Packs A Built 421 Super Duty

Some legends age well, like this 1962 Pontiac Catalina. It’s easy on the eyes by today’s standards, plus this full-size hardtop coupe has a bite you won’t soon forget, thanks to the 421ci V8 Super Duty lurking under the hood. All this can be yours.

That 421 Super Duty was built by Jim Taylor back in 2007 and has helped make this ride famous. Upgraded parts include the crankshaft, cylinder heads, rods, pistons, and intake. Mated to the engine is a Borg Warner T-10 four speed, which works with a Posi Trac rear using a 4.56 gear. This car has been featured by the Hot Rod Network, High Performance Pontiac, and more. The block and valve covers have been painted a turquoise, making for a unique presentation when you pop the hood.

For the 1962 model year, Pontiac really cleaned up the look of the Catalina. Among the major styling shifts was a hardtop that looked like a convertible (although the Bubble Top on this is a clone job), plus a twin grille shaped like a giant V, as well as trim that goes all the way down both sides. This car has been painted Cameo Ivory, which simplifies things further. Red decals for Pontiac Racing and the 421 Super Duty let everyone know this big car means business, plus the throwback Pontiac insignia just adds more nostalgia. Chrome and stainless steel trim is subtle, as are the steel wheels with no hubcaps.

Three colors come together for the interior: light blue, navy, and cream. New seat padding and upholstery boosts comfort. In addition to the factory controls and gauges is an aftermarket tachometer mounted to the A-pillar, plus three more aftermarket gauges mounted under the center portion of the dash.

While the Catalina name was used for the top trim on the 1950 Pontiac Chieftain, it didn’t become its own model line until 1959, with the nameplate lasting all the way until 1981. Production numbers for the 1962 model year were high, so that means finding parts for this full-size sedan isn’t difficult. The additional goodies included in this high-performance build make this Catalina a solid addition to any garage. You can buy it through Smoky Mountain Traders.
