A highly modified 1970 Dodge Challenger with deep ties to drag racing history is now being offered for sale, showcasing its transformation from a factory muscle car into a purpose-built Pro Stock machine. Listed at $69,900, the vehicle reflects both its racing pedigree and extensive performance upgrades.
Originally produced during the debut year of the Challenger model, the car began life as a Plum Crazy HEMI-equipped four-speed example. The 1970 Challenger marked Dodge’s entry into the competitive pony car segment, sharing its platform with the Plymouth Barracuda and quickly gaining recognition for its bold styling and high-performance options. Among those options was the legendary 426 cubic-inch HEMI V8, which helped cement the car’s reputation both on the street and at the drag strip.
This particular example was later converted into a Pro Stock backup car for racing figure Mike Fons and is associated with the Rod Shop Car out of Columbus, Ohio. The build was completed on a John Holt chassis, underscoring its focus on competitive racing performance rather than factory originality.
Under the hood, the Challenger retains its HEMI identity with a date-coded 426 cubic-inch V8. The engine has been enhanced with aluminum heads and a Tunnel Ram intake system paired with Dominator carburetors, creating a setup designed for maximum airflow and power. The drivetrain includes a G-Force four-speed manual transmission and a Black Magic racing clutch, channeling output to a Dana rear end equipped with 4.88 gearing.
Performance figures indicate the car is capable of completing the quarter mile in approximately 8.80 seconds, placing it firmly in the realm of serious drag racing machines. Additional race-focused features include a wheelie bar, parachute system, carbon quick-disconnect steering wheel, Auto Meter instrumentation, and a specialized fuel cell.
Finished in white with a black interior, the Challenger emphasizes function over luxury, reflecting its role as a competition vehicle.
