Some option sheets read like a dare. In 1957, Ford's was the F-Code Thunderbird: a 312-cubic-inch Y-block topped with a belt-driven Paxton/McCulloch supercharger, bolted into a two-seat convertible that only about 200 buyers ever specified that way. A Starmist Blue example with a floor-shifted three-speed manual is now live on Bring a Trailer, sitting at $52,000 with bidding scheduled to close Wednesday, November 4 at 1:10 p.m. ET. Why the F-Code is the one to find

Ford built 21,380 Thunderbirds for 1957, and the vast majority were ordinary, charming personal luxury cruisers. The F-Code is the exception. According to the listing, this car is one of roughly 200 built with the supercharged 312, and outside accounts land in the same neighborhood: Old Cars Weekly counts 196 F engines, while RM Sotheby's puts the figure at about 200. Ford rated the setup at 300 horsepower, though RM Sotheby's notes that number is widely considered conservative.

This one wears the full recipe: the F-code 312 with a Paxton/McCulloch VR57 blower and a Holley four-barrel, rated by Ford at 300 hp and 340 lb-ft of torque. The seller says the engine was rebuilt and dyno-tested in late 2008 by Performance Automotive of Greenville, Tennessee.

The spec within the spec

What makes this particular car the best spec on the internet this week is the gearbox. Power runs to the rear wheels through a three-speed manual transmission without overdrive, shifted from the floor. It is a deliciously unfiltered way to use a supercharged 1957 Thunderbird, and the kind of combination collectors and gearheads both appreciate.

The rest of the build sheet is just as period-correct:

  • Starmist Blue paint over a Dresden and Starmist vinyl interior with pleated inserts
  • A removable porthole hardtop
  • A Town & Country AM radio and a 140-mph speedometer in the engine-turned dash
  • Turbine wheel covers on 14-inch wheels, which were reduced from 15 inches for 1957
  • Unassisted steering and drum brakes, as Ford intended

Ownership and condition

The seller bought the Thunderbird in June 2004 and shipped it from Utah to Tennessee. The car was then disassembled for a multi-year cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment completed around 2016. The body went to Mark Stacey of Stacey's Concours Restorations in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and the seller says the roughly 2019 repaint exceeded $60,000. The interior was refurbished in 2014.

The odometer reads 58 miles, about 50 of which the seller says have been driven since the refurbishment; total mileage is unknown. The sale includes a copy of the original Ford invoice and a clean Tennessee title in the owner's name.
