This No-Reserve 1995 International 3800 Bookmobile Is The Diesel Library Of Your Dreams

Some project cars whisper. This one rolls up in lime green, eight feet tall, with cartoon woodland creatures painted down the flanks and the word BOOKMOBILE spelled out in a rainbow of letters. It is impossible to ignore, and right now it is one of the most charming oddballs crossing the digital auction block.

Listed with no reserve over on Cars & Bids, this 1995 International 3800 started life as a school bus chassis before Moroney Body Works transformed it into a rolling public library. The result is a genuine mobile reading room, complete with floor-to-ceiling bookcases, storage cabinets, and enough character to make a vintage Volkswagen Microbus look shy.

Under the long, low hood sits International's legendary DT-466, a 7.6-liter turbodiesel inline-six that built its reputation on near-indestructible reliability in commercial and agricultural duty. Power heads to the rear wheels through a stout Allison AT500 four-speed automatic, so while nobody is going to mistake this rig for a sports car, it should keep chugging along for decades with basic maintenance.

Inside is where the magic really happens. Moroney Body Works fitted the cabin out with rows of bookcases and storage cabinets, swiveling front air seats, central air conditioning, curtains, a sunroof, and insulated walls to keep readers comfortable in any climate. There is even a wheelchair lift for accessibility and a rear-view camera to help wrangle the big diesel into tight parking spots.

One of the cleverest touches is the onboard Kubota Lowboy II GL11000 diesel generator, which means this bus can power its lights, climate control, and accessories completely off-grid. Pair that with the 22.5-inch wheels and air suspension, and you start to see the bones of an incredible camper conversion, a mobile shop, a vending operation, or simply the most literate tailgate rig in the parking lot.

The seller reports roughly 75,800 miles on the chassis, with the selling dealer having acquired the 3800 in April 2026 and added only about 400 miles since. The accompanying Carfax shows some gaps in the history but no mileage discrepancies. As you would expect from a three-decade-old commercial vehicle, there are some cosmetic flaws to note, including chips and scratches around the exterior, paint cracks on the windshield frame, wear on the seats and interior surfaces, and some corrosion on a few underbody components.

Buyers should also do their homework before bidding. The dealer notes that this 3800 is not currently CARB compliant, so California residents in particular will want to confirm registration requirements in their state before placing a bid. The sale includes keys for the ignition, doors, cabinets, and generator, along with the owner's manuals.

With no reserve and bidding still climbing, this rolling library is the kind of left-field find that proves the collector world is about far more than just numbers-matching muscle cars and six-figure supercars. Whether you want to keep spreading the joy of reading or reimagine it as the ultimate adventure vehicle, this Bookmobile is ready to write its next chapter.
