Rare Porsche 356 Zagato Restomod Hits Market With $525,000 Asking Price

A highly exclusive 1960 Porsche 356 Zagato “Sanction Lost” coupe has entered the market with an asking price of $525,000, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most distinctive restomod projects in recent years.

The vehicle is one of only nine coupes produced by Italian coachbuilder Zagato as part of a limited revival program based on rediscovered late-1950s design studies. The project originated when Zagato uncovered archival drawings in 2015, leading to the creation of a small series of cars built with Porsche’s approval between 2015 and 2019. Each example combines a restored original Porsche 356 chassis with a newly crafted lightweight aluminum body.

This particular coupe was originally sourced from a 1960 Porsche 356 B discovered in New York before being transported to Milan for transformation. Its original 1.5-liter flat-four engine and chassis were restored, forming the foundation for the custom-built Zagato bodywork. The finished car debuted publicly in 2019 during Monterey Car Week.

After taking delivery, the current owners commissioned additional refinements to elevate the vehicle’s performance and overall quality. More than $100,000 was invested in further enhancements, including a complete rebuild of the Super 90 engine, increasing output to 125 horsepower. Additional upgrades included lightweight magnesium wheels, contributing to the car’s exceptionally low weight of approximately 1,500 pounds.

The result is a driving experience centered on agility and responsiveness, made possible by the combination of minimal mass and balanced power. The car has been used sparingly, primarily for local events in the Los Angeles area, and has also appeared in automotive media features.

Rarity adds to the model’s appeal, with only a handful of examples located in the United States. The limited production run and bespoke craftsmanship position the Zagato coupe as both a collector’s item and a design-focused automotive piece.

The decision to sell comes as the current owners shift their focus to another historically significant Porsche model. The Zagato is now available through a representative, with its price reflecting both its exclusivity and the extensive work invested in its development.
