Rare Nismo CRS R34 GT-R Could Push Skyline Values Near $1 Million at Villa d’Este Auction

A highly exclusive 2002 Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R CRS by Nismo is expected to command as much as $1 million at the upcoming Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este Auction, underscoring how rare factory-backed Japanese performance cars have entered a new level of the collector market.

Pierce Arrow Motorette

Cadillac Deville

The car, part of a five-vehicle GT-R collection offered through Broad Arrow and powered by Hagerty, stands apart from typical high-value Skyline sales because of its connection to Nismo’s Clubman Race Spec restoration program. Fewer than 20 R34 GT-Rs are believed to have completed the process, making the car one of the rarest factory-restored modern Japanese performance vehicles in existence.

The CRS program was created by Nismo to comprehensively rebuild and modernize aging Skyline GT-R models while preserving their original character. Unlike conventional restorations, the process involves stripping the vehicle down to its bare chassis before rebuilding the car using factory-level standards.

Each chassis undergoes inspection and torsion testing to identify fatigue or structural weaknesses. Components that fail to meet original specifications are replaced, while seals, hardware and mechanical systems are restored or renewed throughout the build process.

The program also places major emphasis on the RB26DETT engine, the twin-turbocharged inline-six that helped establish the GT-R’s reputation worldwide. Engines are disassembled, balanced, blueprinted and rebuilt with performance tuning options available through multiple package configurations. The most powerful variation, known as the R4, expands displacement to 2.8 liters and has reportedly carried a price exceeding $50,000 for the engine alone.

Beyond the powertrain, Nismo restores or upgrades braking systems, transmissions, electrical components and interior materials through Nissan heritage parts channels. Once completed, each CRS car is dyno tested and road evaluated to ensure it delivers a near-new driving experience.

What makes the auction example particularly significant is not only the quality of the restoration but the difficulty involved in securing a place in the program itself. Entry into the CRS process requires approval from Nismo’s Omori Factory, and owners must first supply a suitable donor car capable of meeting the factory’s standards.

Even approved projects face long timelines. Reported wait times have ranged from several years to nearly a decade depending on availability and scheduling. That delay, combined with soaring R34 GT-R values and the uncertainty of acceptance into the program, has made completed CRS cars increasingly desirable among collectors.

Attempting to build a similar car independently can quickly become a costly undertaking. Low-mileage R34 GT-Rs already command substantial prices before restoration work begins, and CRS program estimates have reportedly ranged from several hundred thousand dollars to nearly $1 million depending on the scope of work selected.

The Villa d’Este auction car reflects a broader shift in the enthusiast market, where factory involvement, restoration pedigree and exclusivity are becoming just as important as performance numbers or production totals. For many collectors, the appeal lies not only in owning an R34 GT-R, but in acquiring one restored and certified through Nissan’s most elite preservation program.

As demand for iconic Japanese performance cars continues to grow, the Nismo CRS Skyline GT-R may represent a new benchmark for how valuable factory-authorized restorations can become in the modern collector world.
