Kia Ends Production of the Soul After 16 Years, Marking the End of an Era

After more than a decade of defying automotive conventions, Kia is retiring one of its most recognizable models. The automaker confirmed on October 6 that the Kia Soul will not return for the 2026 model year, ending a 16-year production run that helped shape the company’s rise in the U.S. market.

“The Soul was one of the cornerstones in Kia gaining a foothold in the United States,” said Eric Watson, vice president of sales for Kia America. “We are proud of the legacy Soul will leave behind as it exits our lineup, but equally excited for the future.”

Introduced in 2009, the Soul arrived at a time when the automotive landscape was shifting toward compact, city-friendly vehicles. Competing against quirky rivals like the Scion xB, Honda Fit, and Smart Fortwo, the Soul stood out with its upright stance, playful personality, and iconic hamster-themed advertising campaign. Designed at Kia’s California studio, its boxy shape was reportedly inspired by the sketch of a “boar wearing a backpack,” intended to capture a blend of strength and practicality.

Over three generations, the Soul evolved from a youth-oriented novelty into a respected subcompact crossover. It added modern safety systems, improved interior refinement, and even an all-electric variant. Despite its growth, the Soul maintained its trademark boxy silhouette and surprising interior space, earning a loyal following among drivers who valued personality over convention.

Still, shifting market trends eventually caught up. With buyers gravitating toward larger SUVs and electric vehicles, Kia has redirected its focus to models like the EV6, EV9, and the upcoming K4 sedan and hatchback.

Though its production has ended, the Soul’s cultural footprint remains intact. Its combination of practicality, attitude, and charm made it one of the few cars that managed to be both affordable and unforgettable. For many, the end of the Soul feels less like a model’s retirement—and more like the loss of a friend.
