The car recently changed hands for $172,000, exceeding typical values for similar examples by an estimated $30,000 to $40,000. While the model itself is considered relatively rare, with approximately 300 units produced, rarity alone does not fully explain the premium price.
Comparable versions of the 1989 Carrera, including the 25th Anniversary Edition, have historically sold within a wide range depending on condition and mileage. In some cases, examples with higher mileage have sold for as little as $78,500, while well-preserved models in strong condition often reach between $100,000 and $140,000.
In this case, the connection to Seinfeld played a notable role. Known for his extensive and respected car collection, Seinfeld’s ownership tends to increase desirability among buyers, adding both celebrity appeal and collector credibility. Vehicles linked to prominent automotive enthusiasts often command higher prices due to perceived provenance and care.
However, the car’s condition proved equally important in driving the final sale price. The vehicle featured just 11,000 miles on the odometer, placing it well below average for a car of its age. Low mileage remains a key factor in the collector market, often outweighing rarity alone when determining value.
The Porsche was also equipped with a G50 five-speed manual transmission, a desirable feature among enthusiasts that can further enhance appeal. Combined with its limited use and documented ownership history, the car attracted strong interest during the auction.
The sale highlights how multiple factors can converge to influence pricing in the collector car space. While celebrity ownership can generate attention and elevate perceived value, fundamentals such as mileage, condition and specification continue to play a decisive role.
