Ford CEO’s Classic 1972 DeTomaso Pantera Heads to Auction

A rare 1972 DeTomaso Pantera once owned by Ford Motor Co. CEO Jim Farley is drawing significant attention as it heads to auction, offering collectors a chance to own a piece of automotive history tied closely to the American automaker.

The vehicle, currently listed on Bring a Trailer, reflects both Farley’s well-known enthusiasm for cars and Ford’s longstanding connection to the Pantera nameplate. Originally developed by Argentine industrialist Alejandro DeTomaso, the Pantera debuted in 1971 with a Ford-supplied powertrain, cementing a unique collaboration between European design and American engineering. Ford’s involvement extended beyond the engine, as the company distributed the car in the United States through Lincoln-Mercury dealerships during the early years of production.

This particular example, identified as chassis number THPNMD0401, was first delivered to Ford Aerospace in 1972. The vehicle spent its initial years within the company’s internal fleet before transitioning into private ownership. Over the decades, it passed through multiple hands and spent nearly two decades as a display piece at a Massachusetts car museum before Farley acquired it in mid-2024 through the same auction platform where it is now listed.

The car presents in striking condition, finished in a bright yellow exterior complemented by chrome accents and bronze Campagnolo magnesium wheels. Inside, the cabin features black vinyl upholstery with distinctive houndstooth cloth seat inserts, maintaining a period-correct aesthetic.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 5.8-liter Cleveland V-8 engine paired with a five-speed ZF manual transaxle. Originally rated at 325 horsepower and 344 pound-feet of torque, the car has benefited from careful maintenance, including recent servicing of both the engine and transmission. The odometer shows 34,000 miles, and the sale includes documentation such as service records and spare parts.

As bidding continues, the car has already surpassed the price Farley paid less than two years ago, signaling strong demand for well-preserved examples of the iconic Pantera.
