Stand Out With A 1972 Maserati Indy

Not all Italian classic cars have to be red Ferraris.

Most people haven’t heard of or even seen anything like this 1972 Maserati Indy. That makes it quite unique, so you can take it pretty much anywhere without fear of another person showing up with the same car. Among those who really know cars, the Maserati name stands for Italian performance and brashness, but in a classy sort of way. It’s not difficult to understand why Saratoga Auto Auction is proudly offering this classic for sale.

The seller says this car has remained in the same family since it was purchased from Algar Ferrari in Philadelphia brand new. Service records dating back to the 1980s can be supplied, which is excellent to have on hand. It was passed down through three generations, staying garaged and kept covered, which is why the paint, brightwork, and factory wheels look so fresh.

On top of that, this Maserati went through a restoration process for the past ten years. Among the work done has been the installation of new gas tanks and rubber seals, plus repair work to the driver’s side door. A complete mechanical overhaul ensures the 4.9-liter 90-degree V8 is running smoothly. Especially for back in the early 1970s, the peak 320-horsepower output feels exhilarating.

Italians really know how to make car interiors, and this one is well ahead of its time. The two-tone layout precedes that trend in European cars, plus the leather is soft to the touch and free of major wear. Details like a polished wood shift knob and steering wheel make this car a joy to own.

Maserati debuted the 2+2 Indy or Tipo AM116 at the Geneva Motor Show in 1969. The car was built to celebrate two back-to-back wins by the Maserati 8CTF race cars for the Indianapolis 500 back in 1939 and 1940. The design of the Indy was also supposed to act as a bridge between the Mexico and Ghibli. Produced from 1969 to 1975, it’s rare to find a survivor today.
