Most movie cars end up as set dressing: a hero car, a couple of stunt doubles, and a quiet life in a studio lot afterward. The Acura NSX Roadster built for Marvel's The Avengers is a different animal. It is the one-off Tony Stark drove on screen in 2012, it has never been street legal, and right now it is live on Cars & Bids with no reserve. The auction ends Saturday, October 31 at 5:00 p.m. EDT, and the high bid sat at $88,888 across 12 bids when we checked.
Built for the Movie, Not the Road
According to Acura's own account, the roadster was designed by the Acura Design Studio in Los Angeles under then-Creative Director Dave Marek, and built by Trans FX in Oxnard, California. Rather than start with a showpiece, the team wanted a car that could survive a film shoot, so it chose a well-used 1991 first-generation NSX with roughly 252,000 miles as the donor. Over it went a hand-built resin and fiberglass roadster body, styled to echo the second-generation NSX concept that debuted at the 2012 Detroit auto show.
Underneath, it is still very much an early NSX: a 3.0-liter VTEC V6 rated around 270 horsepower, a five-speed manual, and rear-wheel drive. The suspension was dropped about two inches and the car rides on 18-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels with aftermarket sport seats inside. The paint is a deep red said to match Iron Man's armor, and the screen-used "STARK 33" license plate is still on it.
The Fine Print Matters
This is a prop and a manufacturer prototype, and the listing is blunt about what that means. It sells on a bill of sale, cannot be titled or registered, and cannot be driven on public roads. The seller also flags fragile custom bodywork, micro-scratches on the bumpers, A-pillars and doors, paint cracks on the C-pillars, and some scuffs inside. Think of it as a museum piece you can start, not a weekend cruiser. The sale includes a certificate of authenticity, a signed photo of the Acura creative director with the car, one key and two fobs.
All of It Goes to Charity
The seller is Acura itself, and the listing says 100 percent of the winning bid will be donated to a charity agreed on by the buyer and Acura. The car is part of the brand's NSX 35th anniversary celebration, and it made its first public appearance in more than a decade at The Quail during Monterey Car Week in 2025. Cars & Bids founder Doug DeMuro has also reviewed it, and the video is linked on the listing.
Why It's a Big Deal for NSX Fans
First-generation NSX prices have been climbing for years, as we noted when a modified 1992 NSX showed how far values have come. Celebrity ties have always helped, too. We have covered Ice Cube's convertible-converted NSX, and a clean, original car like this 1991 Formula Red example shows what the standard version looks like. The Avengers car sits well beyond both: it is the only one of its kind, and it comes with a Marvel pedigree.
Movie cars are a category of their own at auction. If this one gets you thinking about screen-used metal, take a look at Paul Walker's 2 Fast 2 Furious Mitsubishi Evo, the original street-racer Herbie film car, or the Movie Car Museum's no-reserve sale of 50 film and TV vehicles.
Bidding on the Tony Stark NSX is open until 5:00 p.m. EDT on October 31. See the full listing, photos and videos on Cars & Bids.
