The 1969 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner remains one of the defining muscle cars of the late 1960s, and a meticulously restored example equipped with some of the model’s most desirable factory options is now set to cross the auction block with Mecum in May.

1983 Buick Electra Park Avenue
1951 Pontiac Chieftain Custom Street Rod
The car is an original Hemi-powered Road Runner fitted from the factory with the legendary 426 cubic inch Hemi V8, paired to an A833 4-speed manual transmission and the sought-after A34 Super Track Pak package. Adding to its rarity, the car was built at Chrysler’s Lynch Road assembly plant in Michigan and is reportedly the ninth example in a production sequence of just 68 similarly configured cars from that facility.
Plymouth introduced the Road Runner in 1968 as a back-to-basics performance machine aimed at younger buyers who had been priced out of increasingly expensive muscle cars. Built on the B-body Belvedere platform, the Road Runner focused on straightforward performance rather than luxury, quickly becoming one of the era’s biggest successes.
Standard models came equipped with a specially prepared 383 cubic inch V8 producing 335 bhp, but buyers seeking maximum performance could opt for the 426 Hemi. The engine delivered 425 bhp and 490 lb ft of torque through dual four-barrel carburetors and came with mandatory driveline upgrades designed to handle the additional power.
The 1969 model year marked the high point for the first-generation Road Runner. Styling updates, the introduction of the convertible body style, and performance options like the A12 440 Six Barrel package and N96 Air Grabber hood helped drive production to more than 81,000 units. Despite those numbers, only 787 Hemi-powered examples were built, making them among the rarest and most collectible Road Runners produced.
This particular car retains its original matching-numbers drivetrain and factory-correct B5 Blue Metallic paint over a blue interior. It has undergone a comprehensive nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration using the original sheet metal, preserving the authenticity that collectors value highly in top-tier Mopar muscle cars.
The Super Track Pak package added significant performance-focused upgrades, including a Dana 60 Sure-Grip rear axle with 4.10 gears, heavy-duty cooling equipment, and power front disc brakes. The car also features the N96 Air Grabber hood system, which used a fiberglass duct assembly and upward-facing vents to channel fresh air into the engine.
Documentation accompanying the sale includes a Chrysler Registry report, a copy of the original window sticker, a copy of the broadcast sheet, a copy of the original Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, and the original fender tag.
The Road Runner’s success during the muscle car era helped cement Plymouth’s place in American performance history. What began as a stripped-down budget performance coupe evolved into one of the brand’s most iconic models, with Hemi-equipped examples now ranking among the most coveted American muscle cars of the period.
