Rare 1985 Buick Grand National Surfaces with 63K Miles, Single Owner Since 1989

One of just 2,102 built in 1985, this unrestored Grand National has had one owner for 35 years.

A rare and remarkably well-preserved 1985 Buick Grand National has emerged for sale, representing one of only 2,102 units produced that model year and offering collectors a glimpse into Buick’s short-lived yet iconic performance renaissance of the 1980s.

The Grand National, introduced in 1982, was Buick’s answer to the muscle car void left by the 1970s fuel crisis and emissions regulations. Riding the wave of back-to-back Manufacturer's Cup victories in NASCAR’s Winston Cup Series in 1981 and 1982, the automaker rebranded its image with a turbocharged six-cylinder coupe that defied the V8 norm. The Grand National’s stealthy black finish and 3.8-liter turbocharged V6 became hallmarks of Buick’s performance revival.

The example now offered is particularly noteworthy for its originality and ownership history. Purchased by the current seller in 1989, the car has been driven just 3,000 miles over the past 35 years. While the original owner accumulated approximately 60,000 miles in its early years, the vehicle has been largely preserved since, maintaining much of its factory-correct character.

Though it features modest updates—including a brake booster, aftermarket wheels, and a radio—the seller retains the original components, allowing a return to factory specification if desired. Minor paint imperfections and light wear consistent with its age are present, but the vehicle retains its original finish and interior. Under the hood, the engine bay remains clean, with only a newer cat-back exhaust system and updated shocks noted among non-original items.

Often overshadowed by the more powerful 1986–87 GNX models, the 1985 Grand National holds its own as a pivotal moment in Buick’s performance timeline. With low production numbers and a cult-like following, survivors like this one offer both investment appeal and nostalgic driving enjoyment.

Buick ended Grand National production in 1987. This 1985 example, with decades of documented care and minimal mileage added, could be one of the more honest survivors still on the road.
