Rare 1972 Pontiac LeMans Sport GT Convertible Restored with 400 V8 Power

Cardinal Red 1972 Pontiac LeMans Sport GT Convertible restored with a 400 V8, rare GT package, and PHS documentation.

A rare piece of Pontiac’s muscle car heritage is turning heads again, this time with restored style and upgraded power. This 1972 Pontiac LeMans Sport GT Convertible is one of just 3,438 Sport convertibles built that year, and among a reported 59 GT-package models originally equipped with a 350 V8—now upgraded to a date-code-correct 400 cubic-inch engine.

Wearing a show-quality Cardinal Red finish over an ivory interior, this LeMans represents a highly desirable combination of rarity, restoration, and performance. Originally Cameo White, the car now features a striking red paint job, complemented by a white convertible top and bucket seats as part of the D67X Sport Convertible package. The GT (WU2) option adds sporty styling cues and further enhances its collectible appeal.

Beneath the hood, the factory 350 has been swapped for a rebuilt, period-correct 400 V8, mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. A functional hood-mounted tachometer and Endura front bumper add to its performance character. Power steering, power front disc brakes, and air conditioning (requiring a 134a recharge) provide drivability suited for modern roads without compromising its classic soul.

Rolling on 14-inch wheels wrapped in 225/70R14 Radial GT tires, this Pontiac also features a rear spoiler and retains factory-correct styling. PHS documentation, including a reproduction window sticker, confirms its original build and rare options.

Now showing 19,653 miles (true mileage unknown), the car was reportedly restored around 2002, with the underside detailed to the same high standard as the body. Minor imperfections, including a small paint blemish and a few mechanical quirks, are noted but do little to detract from its overall presentation.

For collectors and enthusiasts, this 1972 LeMans Sport GT Convertible stands out as a distinctive, last-year GTO-era Pontiac—equal parts muscle, rarity, and top-down cruising charm.
