Partially Restored 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Project Heads to Market

A partially restored 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT is being offered for sale, presenting a rare opportunity to complete one of the most influential Italian sports coupes of the 1960s. The car, an early “Scalino” or step-nose example, is partway through a comprehensive restoration and now requires final assembly and additional finishing work.

The Giulia Sprint GT sits at the foundation of the Alfa Romeo 105 series, a model family introduced in 1963 that defined the brand’s accessible performance cars for more than a decade. Developed from the Giulia Berlina sedan, the Sprint GT combined compact unibody construction, rear-wheel drive, 2+2 seating, and a usable trunk with advanced mechanical features that were rare in its class.

Styling was handled by Bertone, where a young Giorgetto Giugiaro penned a clean, angular coupe that marked a shift away from Alfa Romeo’s earlier rounded forms. The stepped leading edge of the hood became the defining visual cue of early cars and remains especially prized by enthusiasts today.

Power for the Sprint GT came from a 1,570cc all-aluminum twin-cam inline-four equipped with dual Weber carburetors. Output was just over 100 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, paired with a five-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Independent front suspension, a coil-sprung live rear axle, and four-wheel disc brakes gave the car strong handling credentials and helped establish the 105 series’ reputation for driver involvement.

The project car now for sale was originally delivered through Stoddard Imports in Highland Heights, Ohio. After years in storage, it was revived in the mid-2010s and later dismantled in 2018 as restoration work began. Completed tasks include soda blasting the body, applying epoxy primer, powder-coating suspension components, replacing transmission synchronizers, servicing the rear axle, and refurbishing the fuel tank.

The unibody shell is mounted on a rolling dolly included in the sale and retains key components such as the original engine, transmission, gauges, seats, and 14-inch steel wheels. While significant work remains, many of the costly foundational steps have already been addressed.

The car is now offered for sale on Bring a Trailer from North Salem, New York, with spare parts, a tool kit, and an Ohio title. For enthusiasts seeking a hands-on path into classic Alfa Romeo ownership, the unfinished Sprint GT represents both a challenge and a chance to return a landmark Italian coupe to the road.
