A fully reengineered 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ55 is drawing attention as a striking example of how vintage off-road vehicles can be transformed with modern performance and comfort upgrades.
Originally designed as Toyota’s first purpose-built Land Cruiser station wagon, the FJ55 debuted in the late 1960s to meet growing demand for vehicles that combined off-road capability with family practicality. Built on a longer, more rigid frame than its FJ40 sibling, the model helped establish the blueprint for future Land Cruiser wagons. Despite its importance, the FJ55 became known as much for its unconventional styling as its utility, earning nicknames tied to its distinctive front-end design.
The example now offered for sale has undergone an extensive restomod transformation that dramatically changes its performance profile. At the center of the build is a Chevrolet-sourced 6.2-liter LS3 V8 engine producing 430 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque, a significant increase over the original inline-six engine that delivered roughly 130 horsepower.
The upgraded powertrain is paired with a 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission and a rebuilt dual-range transfer case, with strengthened driveshafts supporting the drivetrain. Additional mechanical upgrades include a shortened rear axle sourced from a later Land Cruiser model, upgraded suspension components, and modern braking and cooling systems. The vehicle also features dual batteries and a larger fuel tank, extending its usability beyond the original design.
Externally, the Land Cruiser has been refinished in a white and orange two-tone scheme, complemented by new chrome accents, updated seals, and LED lighting. It rides on steel wheels fitted with all-terrain tires, reinforcing its off-road capability while maintaining a classic appearance.
Inside, the cabin has been completely redesigned with modern materials and amenities. Heated and ventilated bucket seats, climate control, upgraded audio equipment, and digital instrumentation bring contemporary comfort to the vintage platform. Additional features include a locking center console and auxiliary power ports for added practicality.
With only 14 miles recorded since the completion of its rebuild, the vehicle represents a fresh take on a historically significant model. The FJ55’s legacy as a pioneering family-oriented off-roader is preserved, while its performance and usability have been reimagined for modern expectations.
