The collector car market, in your inbox
Classic car news, hand-picked vehicles, and auction coverage. Choose what lands in your inbox.
Plenty of cars cross the block every day, but only a few are worth stopping for. These five close today, October 2, and each one comes with a reason to look closer than the price tag. The picks span Bring a Trailer, Cars & Bids and Collecting Cars. All times are Eastern, and every bid below was checked live this morning, so expect the numbers to move.
1992 Porsche 911 (964) Carrera 4 "Patagonia 4x4" (Collecting Cars)
This is a 964 that has been taken well off the pavement. It is billed as the prototype "Patagonia 4x4," with portal axles under a German-market Carrera 4 first registered in February 1992. The naturally aspirated 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-six and five-speed manual are still there, but the engine, gearbox and suspension have been rebuilt and re-engineered in Germany. The odometer reads 1 km because it was reset during the rebuild. If you only know the 964 as a road car, our look at a backdated 964 with a 4.0-liter engine shows how far the platform can be pushed in the other direction.

1987 Buick Regal Turbo-T (Bring a Trailer)
The Regal Turbo-T is the quieter cousin of the car everyone chases. This one has the Y56 T Package, a 3.8-liter turbo V6 with a Precision turbocharger, a TR Performance intercooler and Pypes exhaust, and a Grand National-spec lockup converter behind a rebuilt four-speed automatic. The seller reports more than $26,000 in work since the car last sold on BaT, and it now wears satin silver wrap with 81k miles showing. It is also listed to benefit Folds of Honor. For the factory-original version of the legend, see this 1987 Grand National with an LS3 hiding under its GNX-style skin.

1967 Maserati Quattroporte Series II Fire Truck (Bring a Trailer)
Few auction cars have a job history like this one. The Quattroporte was sold new in Rome, then sent to Carrozzeria Grazia in Bologna in 1970 and converted into a firefighting vehicle for CEA Squadra Corse at Formula 1 events in Italy. It stayed with CEA for nearly a decade. The current seller bought it in 2011 and reports more than €200,000 spent over a six-year refurbishment. A foam cannon sits behind the cabin, and power comes from a 4,136cc quad-cam V8 with a ZF five-speed manual. It comes with a Maserati Certificate of Origin, a FIVA identity card and Swiss registration. A normal Quattroporte of the modern era, like this low-mileage 2015 Quattroporte S, seems tame by comparison, and so does the Subaru Sambar fire truck we covered earlier.

1992 Autozam AZ-1 (Cars & Bids)
A mid-engine gullwing coupe the size of a golf cart, with a 657cc turbocharged three-cylinder and a five-speed manual. This right-hand-drive Japanese-market AZ-1 shows about 117,600 km, or roughly 73,100 miles, and carries a clean Washington title. It is a reminder of how strange Japan's bubble era got, a story we covered in our feature on the AZ-1. Another gullwing kei, the 1994 Suzuki Cara, also showed up on Cars & Bids, and our gullwing roundup puts both in context.

2000 Alpina B10 3.3 5-Speed (Bring a Trailer)
This is serial number 109 of 240 B10 3.3 sedans built with Alpina's S52B32-based 3.3-liter inline-six, along with the company's front valance, upgraded suspension and exhaust, and 18-inch Softline wheels. It was delivered new to Belgium, imported to the Netherlands in 2012, and has a manual gearbox, which is the version people look for. Alpina values have been climbing, as we saw when a 7,000-mile Alpina Roadster V8 sold with no reserve on the same site.
