Preserved 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 Emerges With Rare History and Low Mileage

A remarkably preserved 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 is drawing attention for its originality, performance upgrades, and a backstory rooted in the golden era of American street racing. Known as the “Acapulco Assassin,” the fastback model is finished in its factory Acapulco Blue paint over a black deluxe interior, retaining both in largely untouched condition.

With just over 13,000 original miles, the Mustang stands out as a rare survivor. Its exterior and cabin display a natural patina that reflects decades of history rather than restoration, offering a glimpse into its past without compromising authenticity. Factory features remain intact, including upper and lower consoles and a light convenience group with signature dashboard indicator lights. The car also features period-correct headrest seats added in the late 1960s.

Under the hood, the vehicle has been enhanced with a professionally built 390 cubic-inch V8, originally from a 1967 GT model. The engine includes performance-focused upgrades such as aluminum heads and intake components, a high-capacity carburetor, and a hydraulic roller cam. Supporting modifications like thermal-coated headers, a stainless exhaust system, and an upgraded cooling setup contribute to reliable performance suited for both cruising and spirited driving.

The Mustang’s history traces back to New York, where it was owned by a father-and-son duo involved in the street racing scene. Purchased with low mileage, the car saw engine swaps during its active years, including the installation of a larger racing engine for competition use. After its final season in the early 1970s, the vehicle was stored with plans for restoration that were never completed, remaining untouched in a garage for nearly five decades.

Rediscovered in 2020, the car underwent a careful mechanical refresh while preserving its originality. It retains all original sheet metal and remains rust-free. Updates include new brake and fuel lines, a rebuilt front suspension, and a reinforced rear axle assembly designed for improved durability.

Now offered for $89,900, the Mustang represents a unique blend of preservation, performance, and history—an example that captures both the spirit of its era and the enduring appeal of classic American muscle. See it here.
