The car, which was listed on Bring a Trailer while located in Greece, reached a top bid of 226,000 Euros before the auction closed without a sale. Its history and ownership connection to Shelby helped separate it from other examples of the iconic muscle car.
The GT500 became part of Shelby’s personal ownership in 1999 during a period when he and business associate Stephen Becker were actively buying and reselling Shelby vehicles. Documentation included with the car outlined the vehicle’s ownership history through correspondence tied to the Shelby American Auto Club registry.
According to those records, Shelby drove the Mustang for roughly six months before it was sold to a Kansas dealership owner with a large muscle car collection. Becker later reacquired the car after the owner suffered a skiing injury that prevented him from operating a manual transmission vehicle for an extended period.
The car eventually changed hands again in 2011, when it was exported to Greece to join another private collection. Supporting paperwork accompanying the vehicle included a National Shelby Registry certificate, a Shelby American Auto Club certificate and an Elite Marti Report.
One of the more unusual details about the GT500 involved modifications added during Shelby’s ownership. A period-correct aftermarket air conditioning system was installed to improve comfort for driving in the Las Vegas climate, where Shelby’s business operations were based. The car also received aftermarket headers, a fitting addition considering Shelby’s long-standing reputation for performance-focused upgrades.
Like all 1967 Shelby GT500 models, the car left the factory powered by a 428 cubic-inch Police Interceptor V8 engine equipped with dual four-barrel carburetors producing 335 horsepower. The GT500 also featured upgraded suspension components, a fiberglass ram-air hood, front anti-roll bar, distinctive fender extensions and a ducktail-style rear spoiler.
Performance figures from the era placed the GT500 among the quickest American performance cars of its time. Testing conducted during the model’s original production years recorded a 0-to-60 mph time of 6.5 seconds and a quarter-mile run of 15 seconds at 95 mph, with a reported top speed approaching 128 mph.
The auction vehicle was equipped with a four-speed manual transmission and several factory options, including power steering, front disc brakes, special cooling equipment, interior décor upgrades, fold-down rear seating and 15-inch aluminum wheels.
Market values for 1967 Shelby GT500s continue to remain strong. Recent sales data for original-condition examples has ranged from approximately $165,000 to more than $368,000, reinforcing the enduring collector demand surrounding one of Shelby’s most recognizable creations.
