The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has the highest theft rate in the U.S., with 2022–2024 models stolen 39 times more often than average.
A new report from the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) reveals the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the most stolen vehicle in America, with recent models taken at a rate far exceeding the national average.
The high-performance muscle car, which carries a starting price of about $75,400, was found to be stolen 39 times more often than the typical 2022–2024 model-year vehicle. HLDI’s analysis points to the ZL1’s combination of speed, desirability, and a known security vulnerability as driving factors behind the trend.
“The Camaro ZL1 is very desirable to thieves,” said Matt Moore, HLDI’s chief insurance operations officer. “And there’s a vulnerability that makes them relatively easy to steal if someone gains access to the interior.”
The Camaro ZL1 is the track-focused sibling of the standard Camaro, which itself ranked third on HLDI’s list, with a theft rate 13 times above average. Both cars feature on-board diagnostic ports that store performance and emissions data — but can also be exploited as a theft entry point.
In response, General Motors issued a software update earlier this year for 2020–2024 Camaro models to bolster security, citing evolving theft methods and ongoing collaboration with law enforcement.
The second most-stolen vehicle in the U.S., according to HLDI’s rankings, is the Acura TLX 4WD, with a theft rate 21 times higher than average. Pickup trucks like the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado also dominated the top 20, reflecting thieves’ preference for powerful and high-value vehicles.
On the opposite end, electric vehicles accounted for eight of the 20 least-stolen models, led by the Tesla Model 3. HLDI suggests EVs are less frequently targeted because they’re often garaged and require regular charging, limiting street exposure.
For Camaro ZL1 owners, the report is a stark reminder: performance may come at a cost — not just at the dealership, but in theft risk as well.
