Ultra-Rare 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler SCJ

Among the great muscle machines of the 1970s, few command more respect—or rarity—than the 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler Super Cobra Jet. Built for the golden age of Detroit horsepower, this low-mileage example will cross the block with no reserve at Barrett-Jackson’s 2025 Scottsdale Fall Auction, held October 15–18 at WestWorld of Scottsdale.

Only 1,631 Cyclone Spoilers were produced for 1970, making them an uncommon sight even when new. The Spoiler represented the top trim in the Cyclone lineup, sitting above the base and GT models, and all came equipped with the formidable 429-cubic-inch Cobra Jet V8 with functional ram air. Buyers could choose between a four-speed manual or automatic transmission, while visual cues—such as its aerodynamic front spoiler and bold side stripes—set it apart from other models in Mercury’s performance stable.

This particular car, however, sits in a category of its own. Equipped with the factory Drag Pak, it’s one of just 341 built with that package, which effectively transformed the 429 Cobra Jet into the Super Cobra Jet. The Drag Pak added stronger internal components and 4.30:1 rear gears, all engineered to withstand the strain of competitive racing.

Adding to its uniqueness is a special-order black exterior—one of only 31 Cyclone Spoilers ordered in non-standard colors for 1970. Inside, the four-speed manual transmission, console setup, and period-correct “Day 2” upgrades tell the story of a car built to be driven but preserved with care. The odometer shows just 4,459 miles.

Complementing its factory features are classic aftermarket touches, including American Racing 200S wheels, a Holley 1150-cfm carburetor, Shelby aluminum intake, and a vintage Craig Powerplay stereo amp with 8-track.

With its combination of rarity, originality, and performance pedigree, this 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler SCJ stands as a crown jewel of the muscle era—an opportunity unlikely to be repeated when the gavel falls in Scottsdale.
