Toyota’s Hydrogen Tacoma Concept Produces Usable Water While You Drive

Toyota brought innovation to new terrain at this year’s SEMA Show with the debut of the Tacoma H2-Overlander concept — a hydrogen-powered truck that not only drives emissions-free but also produces and reuses water while operating. The project is part of Toyota’s “Powered by Possibility” showcase, a lineup of custom builds that highlight new energy systems and design flexibility.

Built from the foundation of a standard Tacoma, the concept replaces its traditional 2.4-liter internal combustion engine with the second-generation hydrogen fuel cell system used in the Toyota Mirai. This setup includes three hydrogen tanks integrated into the frame, offering a combined capacity of around 13 pounds. Paired with a 24.9-kWh lithium-ion battery and dual electric motors — one on each axle — the system produces a total of 547 horsepower. The result is a zero-emission truck that emits only water instead of exhaust.

Rather than letting that water go to waste, Toyota Racing Development engineered a new patent-pending exhaust water recovery system. This technology captures, filters, and stores the distilled water produced by the fuel cell process for use in camping or cleaning. While the water isn’t suitable for drinking, it’s ideal for showers or washing while overlanding.

Beyond water generation, the concept truck can supply up to 15 kilowatts of external power — enough to charge other electric vehicles or provide energy to a home base. The Tacoma H2-Overlander also features off-road hardware, including long-travel suspension, Fox 2.5 shocks, and 35-inch tires, along with a roof-mounted camper and robust recovery equipment.

While it won’t enter production, Toyota’s hydrogen-powered Tacoma underscores how future adventure vehicles could sustain both mobility and essential resources far from civilization.
