Restored 1981 GMC Vandura A-Team Replica Brings Iconic TV Van Back to Life

A restored 1981 GMC Vandura built to resemble the iconic van from the television series “The A-Team” has surfaced for sale, blending pop culture nostalgia with classic American van heritage.

The vehicle has been transformed into a replica of the well-known van driven on the television show, featuring the signature gray and black exterior with bold red striping that made the original instantly recognizable. Additional design elements include a roof spoiler, bull bar, spotlights and red wheels, all hallmarks of the vehicle made famous during the series’ run in the 1980s.

This particular example underwent an extensive restoration costing more than $20,000. The process included a bare-metal refurbishment described as museum quality, resulting in a refreshed appearance while preserving the character of the original vehicle. The van’s odometer currently reads 55,486 miles, a figure believed to reflect the original mileage.

Power comes from a 5.0-liter V8 engine paired with a THM350 three-speed automatic transmission. The van remains in its original left-hand-drive configuration despite now being located in England. Weighing approximately 1,940 kilograms, the vehicle represents the robust engineering typical of the GMC G-Series vans produced during the era.

The 1981 Vandura belongs to GMC’s third-generation G-Series platform, introduced in 1971. This redesign moved the engine forward under a short hood rather than placing it between the front seats as earlier cab-forward vans had done. The platform remained in production until 1996, becoming one of the longest-running vehicle architectures in General Motors history.

Throughout its production run, the Vandura was offered in multiple configurations including cargo vans, passenger models and commercial chassis variants. It became a popular platform for custom vans, camper conversions and work vehicles during the 1970s and 1980s.

The model gained lasting cultural recognition when a modified 1983 GMC Vandura appeared in “The A-Team,” a television series that aired for five seasons between 1983 and 1987. The show’s primary vehicle featured a distinctive two-tone paint scheme, red wheels and auxiliary lights, becoming one of the most recognizable vehicles in television history.

While the van currently offered for sale is a replica rather than a screen-used original, it closely follows the styling cues of the famous television vehicle. The exterior features the classic paintwork along with red 15-inch wheels fitted with BFGoodrich tires.

Inside, the cabin seats seven passengers and features gray, black and red leatherette upholstery. Additional interior details include a sunroof, wood and chrome steering wheel, original switchgear and a single-DIN stereo system.

The van also comes with themed memorabilia connected to the television series, including a prop handgun, a member photo, a signed plaque and a California-style A-Team registration plate.

First registered in January 1982 and acquired by its current owner in October 2016, the vehicle has been maintained with a tidy engine bay and underbody for its age. In the United Kingdom, the van is both tax and MOT exempt, although it received a clean inspection without advisories in August 2025.

The restored replica is now being offered for sale through Car & Classic from Lincolnshire, England, presenting fans of the series and classic van enthusiasts with a chance to own a tribute to one of television’s most memorable vehicles.
