A revived version of the classic International Scout is turning heads with a blend of vintage design and modern American muscle, even as Volkswagen-owned Scout Motors pushes forward with plans for electric and range-extended models of its own.
While Scout Motors has faced speculation surrounding delays, rising costs and legal hurdles tied to its upcoming electric 4x4s, company leadership maintains development remains on track. For enthusiasts hesitant about electrification in a volatile EV market, however, an alternative approach is gaining traction: modernizing the original Scout with contemporary performance hardware.

Florida-based Velocity Restorations has built its reputation on that formula. Its latest project began as a 1973 International Scout II but has since undergone a comprehensive transformation. The vehicle now rides on a newly engineered chassis from Illinois specialist Roadster Shop, replacing the original platform with a more advanced setup. The updated foundation features a four-link rear suspension, coilovers at each corner and front and rear anti-sway bars. Wilwood disc brakes provide stopping power on all four wheels.

Under the hood sits a 6.2-liter LT1 V8 sourced from General Motors, the same engine used in the C7 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and sixth-generation Camaro. The powerplant delivers 455 horsepower and is paired with a 10-speed 10L80 automatic transmission developed jointly by GM and Ford. A Dana 44 front axle and Dana 60 rear axle support the drivetrain, while 35-inch BFGoodrich KM3 mud-terrain tires enhance off-road capability.
Despite the mechanical overhaul, the exterior retains a period-correct aesthetic. Finished in a brown and off-white two-tone scheme known as Harvest Moon, the Scout features chrome billet accents and painted 18-inch steel wheels as part of Velocity’s Heritage Series package.
Inside, brown leather and matching carpeting echo the 1970s theme, complemented by modern touches including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a Focal sound system.
The featured build has already been sold, but Velocity lists additional Scouts nearing completion, each priced at $407,900.
