Rare 1987 Ferrari Turbo F1 Engine Offered as Display Piece

A rare piece of Formula 1 engineering history has surfaced on the market, as an original 1987 Ferrari Tipo 033 Formula 1 engine is now being offered for sale as a display unit. Known for its immense power during the turbocharged era of the sport, the engine represents a significant chapter in Ferrari’s racing development during the late 1980s.

The 1.5-liter, 90-degree twin-turbocharged V6 powered Ferrari’s F1/87 and F1/87/88C cars during the 1987 and 1988 seasons. In qualifying trim, the engine was capable of producing up to 950 horsepower, while race configurations delivered closer to 880 horsepower at 11,500 rpm. Despite its small displacement, the addition of twin Garrett turbochargers allowed it to compete at the highest level during one of Formula 1’s most powerful eras.

Development of the engine began in 1986 amid major changes within Ferrari’s technical leadership. The design marked a shift away from the previous 120-degree V6 architecture, adopting a tighter 90-degree configuration better suited to evolving chassis requirements. The engine featured a cast-iron block, lightweight alloy heads, and advanced electronic fuel injection and ignition systems for the time.

Performance gains became evident later in the 1987 season, as Ferrari drivers Michele Alboreto and Gerhard Berger began achieving stronger results. Berger secured victories in the final two races of the year, ending a lengthy winless streak for the team.

Regulation changes in 1988 reduced turbo boost and fuel capacity, leading Ferrari to revise the engine rather than replace it entirely. While still competitive in straight-line speed, the updated version faced challenges with fuel efficiency and throttle response.

The engine now for sale was originally installed in a 1987 Ferrari F1 car and has since been mounted on a red steel display stand. Externally, it appears largely complete, including key components such as the turbochargers, intake system, and clutch. However, its internal condition remains unknown, and it is being sold strictly as a non-running display piece.

The engine is listed with a price range between $23,500 and $47,000, offering collectors a chance to own a tangible piece of Ferrari’s turbocharged Formula 1 legacy.
