An unusually extreme Birkin S3 is drawing attention after being listed for sale in California, combining a lightweight Lotus Seven-inspired chassis with a high-revving motorcycle engine to deliver performance typically associated with far more expensive machinery.

The car is powered by a 1,298cc Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa inline-four engine, producing 175 horsepower at 9,800 rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed gearbox and a limited-slip differential. With a curb weight of approximately 1,200 pounds, the setup results in a power-to-weight ratio of roughly 322 horsepower per metric ton, placing it in a performance category more commonly occupied by supercars and dedicated track vehicles.

This particular example was originally purchased as a kit in 2004 and later assembled in California, with the build completed in 2008. It is configured in left-hand drive and finished in red with black upholstery. Over time, the car has received several updates, including a quick-change rear end with a limited-slip differential installed in 2021, along with supporting modifications to the drivetrain and fuel system.

The design remains faithful to the minimalist philosophy established by the original Lotus Seven, emphasizing low weight and mechanical simplicity. The Birkin S3 platform, developed by South African manufacturer Birkin Cars, has long been regarded as one of the more respected interpretations of the classic Seven formula.

Founded in 1982, Birkin Cars emerged from a small workshop operation and grew into an internationally recognized builder of aluminum-bodied performance cars. Early success came after securing a manufacturing contract tied to a Lotus dealership, helping establish credibility and expand production.

The example now offered features adjustable suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and lightweight wheels wrapped in performance tires. The cockpit includes bolstered bucket seats, a quick-release steering wheel, and a full set of instrumentation designed to monitor the high-revving engine.

With its unconventional engine choice and extremely low weight, the car represents a unique approach to performance engineering. It is currently offered for sale in Costa Mesa as a specially constructed vehicle, further highlighting its bespoke nature.
