Ford introduces Bronco EV and PHEV models in China, blending off-road styling with electrified powertrains for growing green SUV demand.
Ford is taking its iconic off-road brand into new territory with the introduction of electrified Bronco models for the Chinese market. The new “Bronco New Energy” lineup includes a fully electric version as well as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), signaling Ford’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the growing Chinese EV segment.
Visually, the Bronco New Energy closely resembles the Bronco Sport, maintaining the rugged, boxy styling that has made the nameplate a favorite among off-road enthusiasts. However, under the familiar sheet metal lies an all-new powertrain lineup designed for efficiency rather than pure gasoline-powered muscle.
The all-electric Bronco New Energy is equipped with a 105-kWh battery pack, promising competitive range figures to meet China’s rapidly evolving EV standards. Meanwhile, the PHEV variant pairs a 44-kWh battery pack with a gasoline engine, giving buyers a balance of electric commuting capability and extended driving range for longer trips.
Ford has not yet disclosed full performance details, but the models are expected to focus more on versatility and fuel efficiency than on the hardcore off-road capabilities of the U.S.-market Bronco. Still, the Bronco New Energy maintains design cues like pronounced wheel arches, roof rails, and rugged bumpers, ensuring it retains the adventurous look that buyers expect.
The launch of the Bronco New Energy lineup is aimed squarely at China’s booming new-energy vehicle (NEV) market, where plug-in hybrids and EVs have become major sales drivers. It also underscores Ford’s broader electrification strategy as the automaker adapts its global lineup to meet stricter emissions rules and growing consumer demand for greener vehicles.
The Bronco New Energy will be exclusive to China for now, but its introduction raises questions about whether similar electrified Broncos could eventually reach other global markets.
