Ex-Sam Posey Family 1970 Plymouth Superbird Heads to Market

A rare 1970 Plymouth Superbird once owned by racing legend Sam Posey’s family resurfaces with documentation and period history.

A piece of American motorsport history tied to one of racing’s most recognizable figures has emerged for sale. A 1970 Plymouth Superbird, once owned by the family of driver and broadcaster Sam Posey, is now being offered with decades of history and documentation.

The car was originally purchased in June 1971 by Posey’s mother, Mary J.P. Moore, near Pawling, New York. She retained the Superbird until her passing in 2010, after which Posey sold it to the current owner and his late brother. The vehicle was later disassembled and refurbished, with detailed photos and records included in the sale.

Built for NASCAR homologation, the 1970 Superbird was produced for only one year, with just 1,920 examples built. This particular car is powered by a 440-cubic-inch Super Commando V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a Dana Sure-Grip rear axle. Factory-rated at 375 horsepower, the combination was one of Plymouth’s most formidable street offerings of the era.

The car is finished in Vitamin C Orange with a black vinyl roof and black vinyl interior. Signature features include its aerodynamic nose cone, 24-inch-tall rear wing, flip-up headlamps, and Road Runner badging. Inside, the cabin retains its factory appointments, including a Hurst pistol-grip shifter, “tic-toc” tachometer, and Chrysler AM radio. The odometer shows just 29,000 miles, with Posey’s mother believed to have added fewer than 8,000 during her nearly four decades of ownership.

Well-documented through magazine features, including a 2005 Hemmings Muscle Machines story and later coverage in Hagerty Classic Cars and Mopar Action, the Superbird stands as one of the more historically significant survivors. Offered on its Connecticut registration, the sale includes service records, period inspection reports, and its factory broadcast sheet.

For collectors of Mopar performance and NASCAR homologation specials, the Posey family Superbird represents a rare opportunity to acquire a car with both pedigree and originality.
