A weekend trip to a sled dog event in Excelsior took a frightening turn for a Minnesota couple when their trailer overturned on an icy stretch of Interstate 494. The incident, captured on traffic cameras, showed the trailer hauling nine huskies breaking apart as it slid across the freeway, leaving the animals’ owners scrambling to ensure the dogs’ safety.
Jack Christopher, who runs Silent Run Adventures, was driving with his wife when the trailer began to fishtail on the slick roadway. As the vehicle shifted, the trailer’s structure failed, nearly splitting in two before coming to rest on the interstate. Christopher said his first concern was the dogs inside, many of whom were startled but uninjured as the trailer came apart around them.
Eight of the huskies were quickly accounted for, but one, named Hoss, slipped free and ran along the freeway. His escape prompted an urgent search that drew help from a state trooper, Minnetonka police officers, firefighters and passing motorists. Christopher’s wife was ultimately able to reach the dog while responders helped keep traffic clear and the animal out of harm’s way.
One by one, the dogs were transported to a veterinarian in Excelsior in a collection of police cars, personal vehicles and rescue units. A husky named Rebel even rode in the back of a patrol car. All nine animals appear to have avoided serious injuries, though they will undergo continued monitoring for any internal issues that may not be immediately evident.
The trailer, however, was declared a total loss. Christopher credits the safety boxes inside for preventing more severe injuries among the dogs. He has already begun searching for a replacement trailer to get the team back to work.
An online fundraiser has been launched to assist with veterinary bills and the cost of new equipment. Despite the chaotic scene, the couple said the community support that followed has been overwhelming and reaffirming, turning a terrifying moment into one marked by relief and gratitude.
