Bugatti Reveals One-Off W16 Mistral ‘Fly Bug’ Inspired by Nature

The open-top roadster joins three earlier bespoke models commissioned by the same owner, each inspired by elements of the natural world. The new vehicle takes its design cues from the dragonfly, a creature known for its delicate wings and agile movement, reflecting both elegance and performance in its execution.

Developed through close collaboration between Bugatti’s design team and the client, the project originated from a personal exchange that helped shape the car’s creative direction. Designers in Bugatti’s Berlin studio translated that vision into a cohesive concept, ensuring the new model aligned with the aesthetic and storytelling established by the previous cars in the collection.

A defining feature of the “Fly Bug” is its exterior pattern, built around an evolving ellipse motif. The pattern becomes denser toward the rear of the vehicle, blending into darker air intake areas to create a sense of motion and depth. The car is finished in a custom paint called “Dragonfly Blue,” which shifts between blue and turquoise depending on lighting and viewing angle, mirroring the iridescent qualities of a dragonfly’s wings.

The interior continues the theme with a specially developed layered material combining leather and Alcantara. The surfaces feature a three-dimensional geometric design that carries the ellipse pattern into the cabin, including across complex areas like door panels and armrests. This marks the first time Bugatti has extended such a graphic treatment across multiple interior surfaces in this way.

Another technical milestone is the integration of the Bugatti Macaron emblem directly into the exterior graphic, a first for the brand. The iconic badge is embedded within the ellipse pattern on the car’s side, requiring precise scaling and positioning to maintain its intricate details.

Inside, the gear selector features the signature “Dancing Elephant,” a nod to Bugatti’s artistic heritage and the owner’s appreciation for nature.

The project took several months to complete, highlighting the craftsmanship and engineering required for such a complex commission. The “Fly Bug” stands as both a continuation of a cohesive design vision and a singular expression of personalization within Bugatti’s portfolio.
