Drive Or Restore This German-Spec 1961 VW Beetle

This low-mileage Beetle needs a little love, but it's a solid project.

The Volkswagen Beetle is fairly common among collectors, but this 1961 VW Beetle is a little extra special. According to the listing on Drager's Classic Cars of Seattle, Washington, this Beetle was purchased by a U.S. Air Force officer stationed in Germany, and he brought the car back when he came back Stateside where the car passed through three more sets of hands.

Being 58 years old and spending many years in the Rust Belt that is Ohio, this Beetle admittedly has some rust issues underneath (shown well in the images), but the body looks pretty solid as do the paint and the chrome. The white steel wheels with the wide whitewall tires are a perfect complement to the black paint job. While it would make for a perfect restoration candidate, this car would also make a really cool daily driver especially considering the fact that it looks ready for an adventure with the mud flaps, roof rack and bumper guards.

The best part of this car is its well-documented past that includes just five owners including the dealer currently selling it. After being brought back to the U.S., it was passed around in two collections in Ohio before making its way to the West Coast. Drager's says that this Beetle has just 62,000 miles on the odometer, and it's only been driven around 3,000 miles since 2006 – that much sitting could definitely explain the abundance of undercarriage rust.
