1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR Fastback Surfaces on Bring a Trailer

One of just over 1,000 built, this Cobra Jet–powered fastback is finished in Highland Green with Saddle upholstery.

A rare 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR Fastback has hit the auction block on Bring a Trailer, offering collectors the chance to own one of the most coveted Shelby models of the late 1960s. Completed on July 20, 1968, this example is one of only 1,053 fastbacks produced that year.

Originally delivered to Manchester Ford in Bristol, Rhode Island, the car has been with its current owner since 2018 and is being sold on dealer consignment out of North Carolina. Power comes from a replacement 428-cubic-inch Cobra Jet V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.50 Traction-Lok differential.

The GT500KR—nicknamed “King of the Road”—joined Shelby’s lineup mid-1968, sharing much of its styling with the GT500 but upgraded with the potent Cobra Jet engine. This car is finished in Highland Green, though the paint is a respray and the non-original hood shows fitment issues, according to the selling dealer. Exterior touches include grille-mounted Lucas lights, sequential taillights, side scoops, and a rear spoiler.

Rolling on 15-inch aluminum 10-spoke wheels with Goodyear Eagle tires, the car features power steering, front disc brakes, and heavy-duty suspension. Parallel Koni rear shocks have been added to enhance stability.

Inside, the GT500KR retains its Saddle upholstery with bucket seats and a fold-down Sport Deck rear seat. Factory options noted in the Elite Marti Report include the GT Equipment, Visibility, and Interior Decor groups, as well as a tilt-away steering column. Comfort features such as air conditioning and a cassette radio are also present.

With under 32,000 miles showing on the odometer and provenance documented by the Marti Report, this GT500KR presents as a significant Shelby collectible. Bidding is underway on Bring a Trailer, where it will sell with a clean Montana title and spare parts.
