A tidy example of Ford's overlooked Fox-body cousin has turned up on Motorious Classifieds, where this 1982 Mercury Capri RS is listed for $17,900 through GR Auto Gallery in Plainfield, Indiana.
While the Mustang GT soaked up all the magazine covers in the early 1980s, Ford's Lincoln-Mercury division quietly built its own take on the same Fox platform, and clean survivors like this one are getting harder to track down. The car wears a red-and-black two-tone scheme, rides on the factory TRX metric wheel-and-tire package, and packs the venerable 5.0-liter 302 V8 behind a 4-speed manual gearbox. Power steering, power brakes, front disc brakes, and functioning air conditioning round out the equipment list, so it's as usable as it is quick.
The seller believes the odometer reading of 34,068 miles is original, and says the car has been garage-kept and serviced exclusively with full synthetic oil. Inside, a pair of Recaro bucket seats deliver a level of support few economy interiors of the era could match. Whoever buys it also inherits a small stash of spares, including a second 4-speed transmission, extra ignition and fuel-system components, brake parts, and four repair manuals, essentially years of ownership insurance bundled into one purchase.
Hagerty's price guide doesn't yet break the Capri RS out as its own line, but the Capri shared its chassis, drivetrain, and most of its running gear with the Fox-body Mustang, so Hagerty's numbers for the 1982 Ford Mustang 5.0 GT work as a fair proxy. As of mid-2026, Hagerty lists a number-3, "good condition" GT between roughly $10,300 and $19,000, and its broader 1979-1993 Mustang sales data shows an average price near $27,100 over the past year, with results ranging from the low five figures up into the $30,000s for exceptional, low-mile cars. That spread puts this Capri's $17,900 ask right in the middle of where clean Fox-bodies are trading, and Mercury's version has traditionally sold for less than a comparable Mustang despite lower production numbers, a gap the market has been slow to close.
For a buyer assembling a broader collection, this Capri could pair well with other budget-friendly collector cars currently on the market, or serve as a more attainable entry point into Mercury's own performance history, a lineup that never got the credit Ford's badge earned. A documented, low-mile 5.0 Fox-body with this much supporting paperwork and spare inventory doesn't surface often, and clean, unmodified examples on either side of the Ford-Mercury divide keep getting scarcer.
