Few muscle cars carry the mystique of the Boss 429, and this 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 on Bring a Trailer shows why. Finished in Grabber Blue over white vinyl and showing just 4,028 miles, the car is one of roughly 500 built for the 1970 model year, and the auction closes October 12.
The Boss 429 exists because of NASCAR. Ford needed a race-ready hemi-head V8 to homologate for the track, and the Kar Kraft shop in Brighton, Michigan, handled the work of shoehorning the massive 429 into the Mustang. This example carries Kar Kraft serial number KK2288 and is paired with a four-speed manual and a 3.91 Traction-Lok differential, exactly the recipe collectors want.
A Rare Spec, Well Documented
Factory equipment includes power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, 15-inch Magnum 500-style wheels, a Hurst shifter, and the Decor Group. A tachometer, console, and AM radio round out the cabin, while a rear spoiler and Sport Slats add the unmistakable period look.
The paperwork is as impressive as the car. According to the selling dealer, this Mustang has stayed with its third owner for nearly 40 years in Northern California. A letter from Boss 429 authority Bob Perkins attests to the car's originality and mileage, noting the car showed about 4,011 miles when it changed hands around 1988. The listing also includes a Deluxe Marti Report, window sticker copies, the owner's manual, and an Indiana title.
Why It Matters
Boss 429 prices have been climbing, and the model's status is hard to overstate. An unrestored 1969 example became the first seven-figure Boss 429 at Barrett-Jackson, and another Boss 429 helped set a record at the auction house's first Columbus sale. Against that backdrop, a low-mileage, well-documented 1970 car is the kind of find that rarely surfaces.
The car is offered on dealer consignment in Anaheim, California. With bidding at $245,500 at the time of writing and a week left on the clock, expect plenty of action before the hammer falls on October 12.
