GM's design chief had this one-off Corvette built for his wife.

It's always good to be the boss, but sometimes it's just as good to be the bosses wife. That's how this 1967 Chevrolet Corvette COPO came to be in existence when GM's vice president of styling, Bill Mitchell, used the Central Office Production Order (COPO) system to create a one-off car for his wife. This ultra-rare and well-documented COPO Corvette will be auctioned off next month by Russo and Steele.

Mitchell was responsible for the design of the C2 Corvette, and this dual-top Corvette convertible is a stunning example of the car. Custom touches on this Ermine White 'Vette include the full-length stinger stripe, red rally wheels and red-painted undercarriage components, and these red accents perfectly matched the all-red interior. In addition to the color scheme, Mitchell also fitted this car with the 400-horsepower 427 CID V8 backed by a two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, and the optional side-mounted exhaust.

As if a COPO Corvette personally ordered by Bill Mitchell wasn't cool enough, this Corvette comes with plenty of documentation to make it even better. For starters, this car's note book was signed by none other than Zora Arkus-Duntov, the father of the Corvette, and the original built sheet displays Mitchell's name. Adding even more to this car's lore, this COPO Corvette underwent a body-off restoration in 1992, and its high quality and importance resulted in it becoming the first recipient of the Bloomington Gold Historic Award, which it received in June 2001.
