A highly uncommon version of the Land Rover Defender 90 is drawing attention as it heads to auction, combining factory rarity with extensive modern upgrades. The vehicle, a Defender 2.8i, represents a distinctive period in the brand’s history when engineering decisions briefly shifted its identity.
Traditionally known for rugged simplicity and diesel-powered reliability, the Defender built its global reputation on durability and ease of repair. Its utilitarian design made it a staple across industries and terrains. However, during a period of BMW ownership, a South African-built variant introduced a significant departure from that formula.
The Defender 2.8i replaced the typical diesel engine with a 2.8-liter BMW M52 inline-six. Producing 190 horsepower and 213 lb-ft of torque, the gasoline-powered unit brought a smoother and more responsive driving experience. Capable of revving to 6,000 rpm, it transformed the Defender into a more road-friendly vehicle while retaining its off-road capability. Performance improvements included a quicker acceleration time, with 0 to 60 mph achieved in about 9.1 seconds. Only 656 Defender 90 units were produced with this configuration, reinforcing its rarity.

The build leans toward a restomod approach, incorporating LED lighting, custom bumpers, and a redesigned front grille. Inside, the cabin reflects a mix of heritage and contemporary upgrades. Black leather bucket seats with diamond stitching headline the interior, complemented by additional folding rear seating. The dashboard retains its original gauge cluster while adding updated materials and Bluetooth connectivity.
Despite its appeal, the vehicle’s extensive modifications introduce uncertainty for collectors who often prioritize originality. The engine overhaul and customization raise questions about prior mechanical issues, potential replacement components, or the motivation behind the rebuild.
