Every so often a concept car is so striking that the crowd falls in love with it, and then it vanishes forever once the auto show lights go dark. The Isuzu VehiCROSS is the rare exception. It wowed onlookers as a concept and then, almost unbelievably, reached production looking nearly identical to the show car. This silver 1999 example is one of fewer than 4,200 sold in the United States, and it is currently up for grabs at no reserve out of Round Rock, Texas.

A Concept Car That Refused To Disappear

The VehiCROSS story began at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show, where Isuzu revealed a squat, aggressive two-door SUV concept known as the VX. With its titanium grille teeth, matte black hood insert, and chunky plastic cladding wrapping the lower body, the design split opinion instantly, which was exactly the reaction Isuzu wanted. The styling came from an international team led by Shiro Nakamura and Satomi Murayama, working out of Isuzu's European design studio in Brussels. Nakamura would later move to Nissan and shape icons like the Juke, the Qashqai, and the R35 GT-R, so the boundary-pushing VehiCROSS reads in hindsight like an early signature of his work.

What truly set the VehiCROSS apart was how fast Isuzu got it from the show stand to the showroom. At a time when a new vehicle typically took eight years to develop, Isuzu compressed the schedule dramatically by using cheaper ceramic body-stamping dies rather than steel. The trade-off was that ceramic tooling wore out far quicker, which effectively capped production volume. That suited Isuzu fine, since the VehiCROSS was always meant to be a halo car to draw buyers into dealerships rather than a high-volume seller. To hit the timeline, engineers raided the parts bin, borrowing the dashboard from the Rodeo and sharing major mechanical components with the Trooper.

Real Off-Road Hardware Under The Sci-Fi Skin

Despite the spaceship looks, the VehiCROSS is a genuine body-on-frame 4x4 rather than a car-based crossover. It uses a short-wheelbase chassis derived from the three-door Trooper sold only in Japan, giving it a compact 91.8-inch wheelbase and an overall length of just 162.6 inches. Power comes from a 3.5 liter 6VE1 DOHC V6 making 215 bhp and 230 lb ft of torque, paired with a 4-speed automatic. The headline feature was Isuzu's Torque-On-Demand four-wheel-drive system, developed with BorgWarner, which sent power to the rear wheels until any of its 12 sensors detected or predicted slip, then shuffled up to half the torque forward. A dash display showed the torque split in real time, a genuinely cutting-edge touch for the price.

The suspension was equally serious, with monotube shocks featuring external expansion reservoirs borrowed straight from off-road motorcycle racing to fight foaming and cavitation during hard use. A front anti-roll bar nearly 8% larger than the US-market Trooper's kept body roll in check on pavement. At 3,955 lbs the VehiCROSS was no featherweight, but the combination of frame construction, low-range gearing, and that sophisticated damping made it surprisingly capable in the dirt. It backed that up in competition too, winning its class on stages of the 1998 Paris-Granada-Dakar Rally and taking a class win at the 1999 Australian Safari Rally.

A Rare Survivor Worth A Closer Look

Production ran from 1997 to 2001, and in total Isuzu built just 5,958 VehiCROSS SUVs, 1,805 for Japan and 4,153 for the United States, where the base price was $28,900. Buyers who wanted extra flair could option the Ironman Edition with Victory White paint, a hood graphic, Recaro sport seats, and a Yakima roof rack. The model's sci-fi character even earned it a role in the 2000 film Mission to Mars and a later life as the basis for an autonomous vehicle in the DARPA Grand Challenge. Today the VehiCROSS sits in an odd spot in the collector market, genuinely rare and interesting yet still relatively affordable, though values have been climbing as younger enthusiasts rediscover it.

This original 1999 example is finished in silver over a red and black Recaro leather interior, with that two-tone treatment extending to the door panels and the split-folding rear bench. It was reportedly first registered in Nebraska before moving to Texas, where the current seller acquired it in 2023. The odometer shows 181,000 miles, around 2,000 of which were added during current ownership. Power comes from the factory 3.5 liter V6 and 4-speed automatic, backed by the BorgWarner Torque on Demand four-wheel-drive system, a dual-speed transfer case, and a limited-slip rear differential.

The seller has recently replaced the shock absorbers, and the truck rides on 16-inch alloy wheels wearing 245/75 General Grabber AT2 tires, with a spare in the integrated rear carrier. Exterior equipment includes roof rails, a rear wind deflector, fog lights, and heated power mirrors, while the cabin adds air conditioning, cruise control, a leather-wrapped wheel, the real-time Torque on Demand display, and a Kenwood head unit. Honest flaws include a torn driver's seat bottom and wear on various panels. It is offered at no reserve out of Round Rock, Texas with a clean Carfax report and a clean Texas title in the seller's name.
