Rare 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 Emerges With Special-Order Paint and One-of-Six Configuration

While Ford produced more than 317,000 Mustangs for the 1968 model year, the majority were far less exclusive than this particular coupe. Records included with the car show it was ordered in Beige Mist, a discontinued color that remained available only through Ford’s special-order paint program.

The color had previously appeared in the Mustang lineup during the 1967 model year before being removed from the standard palette. Buyers willing to pay extra, however, could still request the shade through Ford’s special-order process in 1968. According to documentation accompanying the vehicle, only six Mustangs were built that year with the same paint and trim combination.

The car’s appearance becomes even more distinctive with its black vinyl roof and red interior, creating a striking contrast rarely seen on Mustangs of the era. With all options and specifications considered together, the vehicle could potentially be a one-of-one example.

Beyond its rare presentation, the Mustang also carries one of the more desirable engines offered during the late 1960s muscle car era. Under the hood is Ford’s S-code 390-cubic-inch FE V8, the first big-block engine available in the Mustang lineup. Introduced in 1967, the engine elevated the Mustang’s performance credentials and helped transform the pony car into a serious muscle machine.

For 1968, output increased to 325 horsepower, though the engine no longer served as the top performance option after the arrival of the 428 Cobra Jet. Even so, the 390-powered Mustang remained a relatively uncommon choice, appearing in fewer than 4% of Mustangs built that year.

The engine in this example is paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. While it remains unclear whether the drivetrain is numbers-matching, the car retains a factory-correct appearance throughout.

The Mustang has undergone at least one restoration and appears to be in excellent condition inside and out. Factory Deluxe interior equipment includes a center console, air conditioning and a remote-operated driver-side mirror. An aftermarket radio has been added, though the remainder of the cabin closely follows original specifications.

The car is currently listed for sale on Bring a Trailer and is located in Gladstone, Oregon. Bidding had reached $23,000 with several days remaining before the auction closes.
