A Porsche 804 Formula 1 replica is gaining traction among bidders as it heads toward auction in North Carolina, offering enthusiasts a rare opportunity to experience a recreation of one of the brand’s most historically significant race cars. With bidding already underway, the car has attracted early interest ahead of its scheduled closing on April 21.

Located in Charlotte, the replica reflects Porsche’s only foray into Formula 1 as a constructor, originally realized in 1962. That year marked both the debut and conclusion of the 804 program, developed for the 1.5-liter Formula 1 regulations. Despite limited production and a short competition window, the original car achieved a milestone victory in the French Grand Prix and demonstrated competitive performance during its brief campaign.

This modern recreation was built by the Wilson Collection in Jupiter, Florida, with a focus on preserving the look and spirit of the original design. The car features a hand-formed aluminum body finished in silver and carries the recognizable number associated with its historic racing counterpart. Its lightweight construction is based on a tube-frame chassis, echoing the engineering approach of the early 1960s.

While the original 804 utilized a rare flat-eight engine, this replica is powered by a 2.0-liter air-cooled flat-six developed by The 901 Shop in Florida. The engine is paired with a Hewland five-speed manual transaxle, delivering a driving experience intended to replicate vintage Formula 1 performance. The vehicle has also been driven by a well-known figure in historic motorsports, adding to its appeal.

Modern updates are integrated carefully to maintain authenticity while improving usability. The suspension incorporates Porsche 911 torsion bars and Penske Racing shocks, while braking is handled by a four-wheel disc system. The cockpit remains purpose-built, featuring minimal instrumentation and a single-seat configuration.

The car will be available for public viewing at an upcoming automotive event in Concord, North Carolina, prior to the auction’s conclusion. Offered on a bill of sale, the replica stands as a distinctive tribute to Porsche’s brief but memorable chapter in Formula 1 history. See it
