A historically significant 1989 Shelby CSX-VNT, once owned by automotive icon Carroll Shelby, is drawing attention at auction as bidding continues on the rare performance hatchback. The vehicle, identified as the first of 500 examples produced, is currently offered with a bid of $28,000 and is set to close in the coming days.

This particular CSX-VNT remained in Shelby’s personal ownership from new until his passing in 2012, adding notable provenance to an already limited-production model. Showing approximately 8,000 miles, the car represents an early example of advanced turbocharging technology paired with late-1980s performance engineering.
Developed as a collaboration between Shelby Automobiles and Chrysler, the CSX-VNT was based on the Dodge Shadow platform and marked the final evolution of the CSX lineup. All 500 units were finished in a distinctive red exterior, complemented by aggressive styling elements such as body-side moldings with gold accents, aerodynamic ground effects, and a rear hatch with an integrated wing.

The car is powered by a turbocharged 2.2-liter inline-four engine featuring a variable-nozzle turbocharger, an early application of technology that uses adjustable vanes instead of a traditional wastegate. Output was rated at 175 horsepower and 205 lb-ft of torque, with this specific example reportedly modified for increased boost pressure. Power is delivered to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.
Inside, the vehicle retains its original gray cloth upholstery with Shelby-patterned inserts, along with period features including air conditioning, a rear defroster, and a factory stereo system. A dashboard plaque confirms its status as the first CSX-VNT produced, further enhancing its collector appeal.

Under current ownership, the car has received maintenance including replacement of key fuel system components and the timing belt, along with servicing of the air conditioning system. It has also earned recognition at a concours event, where it received a class award in 2024.

Offered without reserve as part of a private collection, the Shelby CSX-VNT combines low mileage, documented history, and direct ties to its legendary namesake, positioning it as a notable offering in the collector car market.
