1987 Chevrolet El Camino Choo Choo SS to Cross Raleigh Classic Auction Without Reserve

Final-year El Camino SS Choo Choo Edition, one of 861 built, sells without reserve at Raleigh Classic Auction.

Raleigh Classic Car Auctions is offering one of the final special-edition Chevrolet El Caminos at its upcoming September Special sale, with no reserve. The 1987 Chevrolet El Camino Choo Choo SS is a rare blend of muscle-car style and utility, representing the final year of production for the long-running coupe utility.

Built by Choo Choo Customs of Chattanooga, Tennessee, the SS package was commissioned by Chevrolet beginning in 1983 to give the El Camino a sportier identity. While Chevrolet offered a factory SS, it looked nearly identical to base models. Choo Choo Customs solved that with a Monte Carlo–inspired polyurethane nose, rally wheels, sport mirrors, bold SS graphics, and custom badging. Only 861 examples were built in the El Camino’s final year, making survivors especially desirable among collectors.

This particular example, chassis 3GCCW80H1HS903696, shows 33,641 miles and comes from one of three private estates in the Raleigh Classic Collection. It retains its 305-cubic-inch V8 engine paired with a 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission, producing a factory-rated 170 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque. Features include air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, tilt column, cruise control, and an AM/FM radio with cassette and equalizer.

Additional touches include Cragar chrome wheels, a rear spoiler, and an overhead console. A tonneau bed cover is included with the sale. Known imperfections include paint chips, cracking in the finish and weatherstripping, and a noted history of minor front-end damage in 2014, per its Carfax report.

As part of Raleigh’s September Special, which presents 38 estate vehicles entirely without reserve, this 1987 El Camino Choo Choo SS represents an opportunity to own a limited-production slice of Chevrolet history—equal parts muscle car and pickup truck, with period-correct custom flair.
