1986 Autokraft AC Cobra Mk IV With Roush-Built NASCAR Roots Heads to Auction

A 1986 Autokraft AC Cobra Mk IV with a documented performance-focused past is currently offered at auction, carrying a reported current bid of $60,000 with three days remaining. The car is one of approximately 494 Mk IV Cobras produced after Autokraft acquired the rights to the AC name in 1986, marking a continuation of the Cobra legacy under modern manufacturing standards.

This example was delivered new to Jack Roush Performance Engineering in Livonia, Michigan, in November 1986. There, it received a NASCAR-specification 355-cubic-inch V8 assembled for qualifying use during the 1987 NASCAR season. After completion of that work, the engine was refreshed and detuned for street use. Changes reportedly included lowering the compression ratio, replacing the intake manifold, and fitting a smaller Holley carburetor. The engine now features a finned Cobra-branded air cleaner and Ford Motorsport valve covers.

A Borg-Warner T-5 five-speed manual transmission was custom-built and installed alongside a 3.67:1 rear axle to route power to the rear wheels. The chassis is equipped with adjustable coilover suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. The car rides on 16-inch Halibrand knock-off wheels with black centers and polished lips, wrapped in BFGoodrich g-Force Sport Comp2 tires. A full-size spare is stored in the trunk.

The aluminum body is finished in red with white stripes and includes vented fenders, tubular bumpers, rear fender rock guards, and dual exhaust outlets. A tan soft top, side curtains, black tonneau cover, and removable exterior components are included. Vehicle history records note a January 2007 accident involving contact with a pole.

Inside, the cockpit features low-back bucket seats trimmed in tan leather, with matching saddle upholstery across the dashboard and doors. Interior equipment includes a wood-rimmed steering wheel on a tilting column, Smiths instrumentation, a heater, analog clock, lap belts, acrylic sunvisors, and a lockable glovebox. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 15,000 miles, with about 170 miles added by the current owner since acquiring the car in 2022.

Included with the sale are assorted literature, a 1986 invoice, a removed intake manifold attributed to Jack Roush, removable headrests, side curtains, a Carfax report, and a clean Florida title.
